Cookies and browser storage

Last updated 5 October 2026 · Version 0.1 (draft)

Draft for legal review. This page has been written for MTE Solutions Ltd's solicitor to review. It has not been approved and is not yet in force. Text marked [TO CONFIRM] is a fact still to be supplied.

In short: this website sets no cookies at all. The StrataScope tool sets only the cookies and browser storage it needs to work: to keep you signed in, to remember which job you opened, and to remember choices you made. There are no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, so there is nothing to opt in to and no consent banner.

1What cookies are

A cookie is a small file a website asks your browser to keep and send back. Browser storage (local storage and session storage) does a similar job inside the browser. UK law, the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR), treats both alike: a site must tell you what it stores, and must ask first unless the item is strictly necessary for a service you asked for.

2This website

The landing page and these policy pages set no cookies and use no browser storage. They load no fonts, scripts or images from any other company. [TO CONFIRM: that Cloudflare's bot protection is off for this site; if it is on, Cloudflare may set a security cookie named __cf_bm for 30 minutes, and it will be listed here]

3The StrataScope tool

Set by app.mte-hq.co.uk once you sign in. All are first-party (ours alone), marked HttpOnly so page scripts cannot read them, SameSite=Lax, and Secure on the hosted service.

Cookies the tool sets
NameWhat it doesLastsType
ss_demoKeeps you signed in. A signed token holding your role (contractor or client) and your email, so that the tool knows who you are and which screens you may open.7 days, or until you sign outStrictly necessary
ss_jobRemembers which shared job a client account has opened, so each page shows that job.7 days, or until you sign outStrictly necessary
ss_adminKeeps the operator signed in to the access portal. Set only for the operator, never for a customer.7 days, or until sign-out, which also cancels it on the serverStrictly necessary
ss_demo_contractor, ss_demo_clientOnly on a local test install with the sign-in check switched off: remember both test sign-ins so a tester can switch roles. Not set on the hosted service.Until the browser closesStrictly necessary

4Browser storage

What the tool keeps in your browser
KeyWhat it doesLasts
ss-legal-accepted (local storage)Records that you accepted the terms notice, and which version, so it is not shown again until the terms change. Your acceptance is also recorded on our server against your sign-in.Until you clear it
stratascope.branding (local storage)The logo and title-block details you chose for drawings and reports. Written only when you set them.Until you clear it
strata-scope:overlays (session storage)Design drawings you loaded over the site plan, kept so a reload does not lose them. Written only when you load one.Until the tab closes

The map tiles are fetched by our server and cached by your browser for a day like any image; that cache holds no information about you.

5Why there is no consent banner

Everything above is needed for a service you asked for: signing in, opening a job, keeping a choice you made. PECR does not require consent for that, only that you are told, which is what this page and the notice shown when you first use the tool do. If we ever add analytics or anything else optional, we will ask first and you will be able to say no.

6Controlling them

Signing out deletes the sign-in cookies. You can also delete cookies and site data in your browser's settings; if you block the tool's cookies you will not be able to sign in. Questions to [email protected].
